Every part explains 15 English words which are used in English newspaper, storybooks, magazines, etc. These English words are extremely useful for most English exams like TOEFL, IELTS, Banking exams, Central government exams like SSC, etc.
15 English words and their meanings:
1) run-up
- A period of time very near but before an important event (last period before that event stars)
- The preparation for an important event.
Example:
Security has tightened in run-up to Republic day.
Tamil meaning:
run-up = பண்டிகையின் ஆயத்த நாள்கள், பண்டிகையின் ஆயத்தம்.
2) recruits:
A person who joins an organisation, company, armed forces, etc. is called recruit.
Example:
Network of IS recruits busted.
Tamil meaning:
recruits = பணியிலமர்த்தப்பட்டவர்
3) busted:
Caught in the act of doing something wrong and likely to be punished
Example:
Network of IS recruits busted.
Tamil meaning:
busted = தவறு செய்து பிடிக்கப்பட்டு தண்டிக்கப்படும் நிலையிலிருத்தல்
4) crackdown:
Severe action taken to restrict the activities of criminals or of people opposed to the government or somebody in authority.
Example:
Bangladesh Police Force is continuing crackdown against illegal activities and casinos in the country.
Tamil meaning:
crackdown = கடும் நடவடிக்கை
5) sympathiser:
A person who supports or agrees with something or somebody (a political cause, political party, opinion, ideology, groups, etc.)
Example:
Mosque trustees failed to monitor Islamic State sympathiser.
Tamil meaning:
sympathiser = ஆதரவாளர் (அரசியல் கட்சி, கருத்து, கொள்கை போன்றவற்றை ஆதரித்தல்)
6) allegedly:
To state something as a fact or claim to be happened but without evidence
Example:
Two members allegedly used stolen ID to make $2,500 purchase.
Tamil meaning:
allegedly = கூறப்படுதல்
உதாரணம்:
இரண்டு பேர் திருடப்பட்ட ID – ஐ 2,500 டாலர் மதிப்பிலான பொருள்கள் வாங்க உபயோகப்படுத்தியதாகக் கூறப்படுகிறது.
7) outfit:
a group of people working together as an organisation or a team
Example:
He is one of the members of terrorist outfit.
Tamil meaning:
outfit = ஒரு அமைப்பு அல்லது ஒரு குழு அல்லது ஒரு சங்கம்
8) allegiance:
being loyal and supporting a political party, ruler, group, etc.
Example:
New U.S. Citizens Take Oath Of Allegiance At Fort McHenry On Constitution Day.
Tamil meaning:
allegiance = விசுவாசமாயும் ஆதரவாயுமிருத்தல்
9) owe:
To have a responsibility to do something for somebody
Example:
He owes allegiance to that political party.
Tamil meaning:
owe = கடமைப்பட்டிரு
உதாரணம்:
அவன் அந்த கட்சிக்கு ஆதரவாயிருக்கக் கடமைப்பட்டுள்ளான்.
10) impending:
to refer something(an unpleasant event or something) is going to happen
Example:
There is no impending terror attacks.
Tamil meaning:
impending = நடைபெறவிருக்கிற
உதாரணம்:
தற்பொழுது தீவிரவாத தாக்குதல் எதுவும் நடைபெறப்போவதில்லை.
11) detonator ( /ˈdetəneɪtə/ ) :
A device for making something (especially an electrical device used to make a bomb explode)
Example:
Police recovered detonators, wires, etc.
Tamil meaning:
detonator = வெடித்தூண்டி (வெடிபொருளை வெடிக்கச் செய்யும் கருவி)
12) IED :
Improvised explosive device ; a type of bomb made and used by people who are not members of an official army or military, etc.
Example:
The military troops recovered an improvised explosive device (IED) in Mumbai.
Tamil meaning:
IED = மேம்படுத்தப்பட்ட வெடிக்கும் சாதனம்
13) Procurement:
The process of getting supplies ( especially for a government or for an organisation.
Example:
Government allocated a budget for the procurement of military supplies.
Tamil meaning:
procurement = கொள்முதல் (பொருள்களை வாங்குதல்)
14) detain:
To keep somebody in an official place, such as a police station, a prison or a public place and prevent them from leaving
Example:
Youth were detained for suspected links with the terrorists.
Tamil meaning:
detain = காவலில் வை, சிறையிருக்கச்செய்
15) envoy, emissary:
a person who is sent as a representative to other government or organisation
Example:
Indian envoy meets Kulbhushan Jadhav 3 years after arrest as Pakistan grants consular access.
Tamil meaning:
envoy, emissary = தூதுவர்
