Part - 2

Every part explains 15 English words which are used in English newspaper, storybooks, magazines, etc. These English words are extremely useful for most English exams like TOEFL, IELTS, Banking exams, Central government exams like SSC, etc.

15 English words and their meanings:

1) tip-off:

Secret information or warning

(Secret information given by someone to the police, etc. to warn them about illegal activities may happen)

Example:

Punjab cops after getting a tip-off from the J&K police
held a resident who has connection with terrorists.

Tamil meaning:

tip-off = சிறு துப்பு, உதவிக் குறிப்பு, இரகசிய தகவல்.

உதாரணம்:

ஜம்மு காஷ்மீர் காவலர்களிடமிருந்து பெற்றுக் கொண்ட இரகசிய துப்பின் உதவியால் பஞ்சாப் காவலர்கள் தீவிரவாதிகளிடம் தொடர்பு வைத்திருந்த நபர் ஒருவரை கைது செய்தனர்.

2) Showpiece:

An outstanding example of something which is to admire and to attract attention.

Example:

The new factory is a showpiece of British Industry.

Tamil meaning:

showpiece = காட்சிப் பொருள், கலைப் பொருள், நல்லுதாரணப் பொருள்.

விளக்கம்:

கவருதலுக்காகவும் கவனத்தை ஈர்ப்பதற்காகவும் உதாரணமாக வைக்கப்படும் சிறந்த பொருள்.

உதாரணம்:

புதிய தொழிற்சாலையானது இங்கிலாந்து தொழிற்கூடத்திற்கு ஒரு நல்லுதாரணமாக இருக்கிறது.

3) parade (/pəˈreɪd/):

Procession , It is a public procession which means people and/or vehicles move through a public place in order to celebrate an event or a day.

Example:

The Republic day parade would be the contingent of 56 personnel.

Tamil meaning:

parade = பவனி, அணிவகுப்பு, ஊர்வலம்

உதாரணம்:

குடியரசு தின அணிவகுப்பானது 56 பணியாளர்களைக் கொண்ட இராணுவ குழுவைக் கொண்டதாக இருக்கும்.

4) contingent:

A group of soldiers being a part of a larger force

Example:

The contingent of troops included members of China’s 8,000 strong UN Peacekeeping force for the National day parade.

Tamil meaning:

contingent = இராணுவக்குழு, பெரிய படையிலுள்ள உறுப்பினர்களைக் கொண்ட குழு

5) convocation:

i) A large formal meeting or celebration (an assembly of the large number of people)

ii) The degree awarding ceremony (especially in India)

Example:

A long-standing tradition was changed at the 56th annual convocation ceremony of IIT Madras on Monday.

Tamil meaning:

convocation = பட்டமளிப்பு விழா, பொதுக்கூடுகை, பேரவை.

6) dais (/ˈdeɪɪs/):

Stage

Example:

Actress took to the dais with the participants to dance along.

Tamil meaning:

Dais (தேஸ்) = மேடை

7) donning:

To put on clothes, etc.

Example:

During the ceremony first-year doctoral students marked the beginning of their graduate careers by donning white lab coats and taking an oath of integrity.

Tamil meaning:

donning = அணிதல் , உடையணிதல்.

8) commotion:

A sudden noisy confusion or excitement

Example:

Modi took dais. Students donned blue stole. Modi spoke through the commotion.

Tamil meaning:

commotion = குழப்பம், பதற்றம், சலசலப்பு

9) dharna (/ˈdɑː.nə/):

A form of protest as a group and refusing to leave from the place

Example:

Gurugram college teachers sit on dharna, demanding fulfillment of unmet promises.

Tamil meaning:

dharna = தர்ணா, அலுவலகத்தின் முன் அல்லது ஒரு பொது இடத்தில் கோரிக்கைகளைத் தீர்க்குமாறு கோரி அங்கிருந்து செல்ல மறுத்து நடத்தும் போராட்டம்

10) eulogise:

To praise someone very highly in speech or in writing

Example:

Mr. Modi eulogised Dr. Ambedkar’s struggle.

Tamil meaning:

eulogise = புகழுதல், பாராட்டுதல்

11) tribute:

An act (read, write, speech, etc.) which shows your respect and admiration for someone (especially, for a dead person and in formal occasion)

Example:

Mr. Modi paid tributes to Dr. Ambedkar.

Tamil meaning:

tribute = அஞ்சலி, பாராட்டுரை.

12) probe:

Investigate, to try to discover information asking lot of questions, to search into or examine something

Example:

Judicial panel probes into new evidence in the suicide case.

Tamil meaning:

probe = ஆய்வு செய்தல், பரிசோதனை, விசாரணை

13) tizzy:

A state of nervous excitement or confusion

Example:

The police were in a tizzy about the incident

Tamil meaning:

tizzy = பதற்றம், நடுக்கம்

14) backpack:

A large bag with loaded things

Example:

Young men were loaded with backpacks.

Tamil meaning:

backpack = முதுகுப்பை, பெரிய பை

15) grab:

A picture taken from a video or TV series and stored on a computer

Example:

A CCTV grab of the lab recovered to obtain clues.

Tamil meaning:

grab = படக்காட்சி

விளக்கம்:         

ஒரு காணொளிக் காட்சியிலிருந்தோ (வீடியோ) அல்லது தொலைக்காட்சி நிகழ்ச்சிகளிலிருந்தோ எடுக்கப்பட்ட படம் (இமேஜ்).
